The island’s Hora, built 200 m. above sea level, extends into and around the medieval castle that stands proudly at the edge of the cliff. Most of the hotels, all exceptionally attractive, are in Hora.
Hora extends into and around the medieval Castle that stands proudly on the edge of the cliff. The blossoming bougainvillea that stand out on the balconies of the houses in the Castle, in conjunction with the view of the endless Aegean, make the spectacle unique.
The incomparable white of the genuine Cycladic architecture of the houses is emphasized by the multicolored doors and window frames; the paved roads and many squares with large plane trees invite the visitor to relax under their dense shade. As soon as night falls, the squares are crowded with people enjoying the local delicacies in the tavernas. After the meal, you can enjoy traditional sweets at the confectioners in Hora, and then try the strong flavor of the famous rakomelo served in all the bars of Hora. As night proceeds, everybody on the island gathers in the squares of Hora and the fun begins!
Most of the beaches on the island have pebbles and tamarisks that offer their natural shade to the sunbathers. The road from the island’s port, Karavostasi, a lovely seaside community with an exceptional beach, will take you to the sandy beach of Hohlidia, to Vitzetzo, Latinaki, Pountaki and Livadi. Caiques also start out from Karavostasi on their way to Katergo, the most beautiful beach on the island with cool crystal waters and small pebbles. Agali, in the Bay of Vathy on the west coast of the island, is a splendid beach with vertical rocks and crystal clear waters, which is easily accessible by road and has several tavernas. From here, the path starts to Agios Nikolaos, a beach with small pebbles, and a taverna with a panoramic view. On the northeastern coast of the island, you will find the beaches of Vorina, featuring the green stone of Folegandros, Agios Georgios and Serfiotiko, which can be reached only on foot or by caique.
